HONG KONG -- A sweeping new national security law comes into force in Hong Kong on Saturday, after zipping through the local legislature.
The Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, as it is officially called, follows the imposition of a separate national security law by Beijing in June 2020. Despite assurances from Hong Kong and mainland Chinese officials, the local law has raised significant concerns over its effects on rights and freedoms in the city.
