NEW YORK -- Western nations on Tuesday condemned the jailing of pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong, in the largest national security case brought by the city.

In the case widely referred to as "Hong Kong 47," or "HK47," 45 politicians, academics, journalists and activists were handed prison sentences of up to 10 years for subversion under a harsh national security law. Two others were acquitted in May.
