TOKYO -- Australia has capped the number of new international students it accepts amid an influx of immigration that has been blamed for exacerbating a housing crisis, following similar moves by the U.K. and Canada that have frustrated universities.

The government late last month announced that foreign enrollments would be limited to 270,000 students next year, 16% fewer than were accepted in 2023. Just over half this allotment will go to public universities, with the rest split between private and vocational schools. The cap will be updated every year, with the specific allocations for individual schools to be decided later.
