NEW YORK -- Ecuador will temporarily suspend visa waivers for Chinese citizens, effective July 1, adding a new -- but not necessarily insurmountable -- obstacle for migrants heading toward the U.S.

The decision was announced on social media by Ecuador's foreign ministry on Tuesday. The South American country has become the first stop for many Chinese migrants aiming to walk to the U.S. in pursuit of economic opportunities. Thousands have been making the treacherous trek up through Mexico, braving dense jungle and human traffickers.
