NEW YORK -- People fleeing political oppression and poverty-stricken economies reached a record high last year, according to research by Nikkei, as a wave of migration sweeps across the world.

In all, 24.07 million refugees and asylum seekers had left countries with authoritarian regimes as of the end of 2023, many going to Western nations.
