TOKYO -- Jasmine, a high-school student born in Japan to African parents, recently received special residence permission from Japan's immigration authorities. After living in the country without official residential status for 16 years, she says a new chapter of her life has begun.
"I have been living like a shadow. Now I can live a normal life," Jasmine, who asked to use a pseudonym, told Nikkei after receiving the permit from the Tokyo Regional Immigration Services Bureau at the end of March.
