JAKARTA -- Japan's prefectural governments, which are facing a severe labor shortage, have been traveling to Indonesia to recruit workers as migrant numbers from Vietnam, the leading historical provider of overseas labor, slows.

Highlighting this trend, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government chose Jakarta for its first overseas seminar in late July, seeking to meet with potential Indonesian workers. The government hopes to address the capital's severe labor crunch in the caregiving sector by organizing similar events in other cities in Indonesia or other Southeast Asian countries.
