TOKYO -- Japanese companies are seeking out foreign students not just to alleviate labor shortages but to facilitate ventures abroad, spurring businesses and local governments to provide services supporting the process.

At frozen-food purveyor Nichirei, three of the 10 new university graduates being hired by the holding company this spring hail from Southeast Asia. As the company seeks to boost the share of its sales generated outside Japan to 30% by 2030 from around 20% now, it aims to cultivate trilingual talent -- fluent in Japanese, English and their native language -- to handle its global business.
