TOKYO -- Japan plans to automate immigration screenings for tourists arriving at its airports, hoping within the next few years to make the process more efficient as Tokyo encourages the number of visitors to continue growing.

Currently, Japanese nationals go through the automated gates, while foreigners need to be screened by an immigration inspector.
