TOKYO -- The owner of a machine parts maker in Osaka faced the prospect of the end of his seven-decade-old company.

The small local manufacturer has big customers, including tractor maker Kubota, giving it solid earnings. But 68-year-old Yutaka Ofuku had no successor lined up, nor could he find a buyer he could trust.
