TOKYO -- Japan's Immigration Services Agency said Friday it will grant long-term resident status to fourth-generation ethnic Japanese immigrants who can meet requirements including Japanese-language proficiency.

The easing of the visa status will allow those descendants of Japanese who emigrated abroad to stay in Japan permanently and to bring their families after renewing the status after five years, the agency said.
