TOKYO -- Japan will allow foreigners with "specified skilled worker" status to become in-home caregivers, expanding eligibility to alleviate an acute labor shortage in the field.

Currently, those workers can provide care only in group home settings. Only caregivers from countries that have economic partnership agreements with Japan, or those with care provider residency status, can provide in-home care.
