BANGKOK/YANGON -- A bridge built in Yangon with Japanese official development assistance (ODA) opened last weekend, leaving the impression that Tokyo maintains economic ties with Myanmar's military-led government.

The Bago River Bridge, which stretches from the country's largest city to the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, was handed over to Myanmar authorities following a delay of more than two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the military regime's power grab in February 2021.
