Myanmar Crisis

Myanmar clashes fuel Thai border tensions, trading of artillery fire

Thousands cross frontier after security forces battle anti-regime Karen group

BANGKOK -- Myanmar military attacks on villages close to the Thailand border have driven a wave of refugees into Thai territory in recent days and triggered a rare exchange of artillery fire between the Myanmar and Thai militaries, signifying new tensions between the neighboring countries.

According to a Thai military source and diplomats based in Bangkok, the Thai military fired artillery into the Myanmar side on Friday as "a warning shot" in response to at least one stray shell that landed in Thai territory on Thursday.
