Myanmar migrants meet families in Thailand to avoid taxes, draft

Workers from war-torn country find respite in Thai cities amid stricter departure controls

CHIANG MAI, Thailand -- The plans of one Myanmarese migrant worker to return home from Dubai in early February to see his family are on hold, now that the country's military government has introduced mandatory conscription for men aged 18 to 35 and for women aged 18 to 27.

Fearing the draft and new immigration procedures, and that he would not be allowed to return to his job in Dubai if he went back home, 26-year-old Nyi Aung, a pseudonym, decided to meet his parents in Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand, instead.
