BANGKOK/YANGON -- Myanmar's military regime is scrambling to deal with a sweeping offensive by ethnic armed groups that has put it in what some observers see as the toughest position since the February 2021 takeover.

The regime on Sunday declared martial law in eight townships in the northeastern state of Shan, on the border with China. The last such declaration was in February, soon after an extension of the nationwide state of emergency was announced.
