BANGKOK/YANGON -- Myanmar's military appears to be preparing to further tighten its grip on power following several cabinet appointments as it seeks to quell a persistent armed opposition two and half years since taking over the government.

The appointments, along with the extension of a nationwide state of emergency, signal the military is more concerned with quelling the armed opposition than holding an election -- a blow for companies hoping for a return to business as usual anytime soon.
