BANGKOK/NAYPYITAW -- Myanmar will conduct a census this year, the military government reiterated Thursday, dismissing concerns that continued fighting in the country could scupper the count.

Plans for a census in 2024 "are progressing," said Soe Win, deputy commander-in-chief of the military, at a ceremony in Naypyitaw marking the anniversary of Myanmar's independence.
