YANGON/BANGKOK -- Myanmar's military government began conducting a census on Tuesday intended as the basis to register voters for a general election it plans to hold next year, despite the intensifying civil war with ethnic and other resistance forces.

The census, scheduled to run until Oct. 15, will measure Myanmar's population and age distribution for the first time in 10 years. A December deadline has been set for areas with intense fighting.
