CHIANG MAI, Thailand -- When Zin Mar last spoke to her husband in mid-July he told her he was about to be deployed with his unit of the Myanmar army to the frontline in northern Shan State and would not be able to contact her for at least a fortnight.

Several weeks later she received news that he had died in battle. Her request for his body to be returned to her was denied.
