Protesters demanding the resignation of suspended President Park Geun-hye and the arrest of Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong marched on Samsung's Seoul headquarters Feb. 4.

Public ire drove fresh demand for Samsung chief's arrest

Prosecutors responded to mounting resentment of big business

SEOUL -- South Korean prosecutors are again seeking an arrest warrant for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, just a month after the first request was denied, as the public pushes to hold leaders of the nation's powerful conglomerates accountable.

Protesters gathered early this month outside Samsung headquarters in Seoul's Gangnam district during a shareholders meeting, clamoring for Lee's arrest. The demonstration was touched off by the Seoul Central District Court's decision Jan. 19 to deny a request by prosecutors to detain Lee, the Samsung group's de facto head.
