TOKYO -- The Japanese government will allow ride-hailing services to operate in certain areas and times of the day starting next April to counter a shortage of taxi drivers.

Under the new arrangement, taxi companies will supervise the gig driver, who will likely be allowed to operate in tourist destinations and some urban areas.
