Leader of Chinese film subtitling ring gets 3.5-year sentence

Verdict comes as foreign movies and shows face tougher fight for screentime

HONG KONG -- The organizer of a popular website offering pirated foreign movies and TV shows with custom-made Chinese subtitles has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for copyright infringement in Shanghai.

Foreign programs have been losing favor with both regulators and the public lately amid a push toward patriotic content, but Renren Yingshi Subtitle Group, also known as YYeTs, had 6.83 million members.
