'Recycle Man of India' turns waste into building materials

Social entrepreneur fulfills boyhood dream of combating global environmental problems

Binish Desai's Eco Eclectic offers nearly 150 products, including road pavement blocks and lamps made from waste in addition to building materials.

MUMBAI -- A 29-year-old social entrepreneur known as "The Recycle Man of India" converts industrial waste into building materials and other products through his company, Eco Eclectic Technologies, driven by his childhood dream of becoming an environmentalist superhero.

Binish Desai traces his social entrepreneurship to "Captain Planet and the Planeteers," an American animated TV series about superheroes defending the Earth from environmental disasters. The series from the 1990s made the young boy from the western Indian state of Gujarat conscious of ecological problems, Desai said.
