TOKYO -- Dozens of Japanese cities are selling metals from the ashes of cremated remains, a Nikkei survey finds, amid growing calls to put rules in place for the process.

Most of the more than 1.5 million people who die in Japan each year are cremated. But while the law does cover larger bone fragments -- typically claimed by families -- the handling of the leftover ashes and who is entitled to them are still legal gray areas.
