LISBON -- For years, Japan and South Korea have been Asian soccer's leading powers, having the most established professional domestic leagues and seeing their clubs win more continental titles than any others. Now, however, there is a genuine power shift westward in Asian soccer.

The change is being driven by Saudi Arabia. The country is aiming to become a sporting superpower and has established itself in Formula One, boxing and golf. But it is in soccer that it is really causing the whole world to sit up and take notice.
