TOKYO -- U.S. figure skater Nathan Chen scored 113.97 points in the men's Olympic short program on Tuesday, winning the event and breaking the world record set by Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu in 2020.

Hanyu, the reigning Olympic champion, scored a disappointing 95.15 in the first round of men's figure skating, falling short of his 111.82 record and even further from a third consecutive Olympic gold.
