HARBIN, China -- The 2025 Asian Winter Games will hold its opening ceremony here Friday in the northeastern Chinese province of Heilongjiang under tightened security after a wave of violent crimes that shook the country.

A reception will be held that day for foreign dignitaries, including Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and South Korean National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik. The ceremony will be held that evening.
