TOKYO -- The $700 million contract signed by major league superstar Shohei Ohtani has shattered several records, as increasingly lucrative broadcast rights deals bolster the war chests of professional baseball teams in the U.S.
Ohtani's 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers eclipses the previous record for highest annual average salary among Major League Baseball players, which was jointly held by pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, who signed deals with the New York Mets for roughly $43.3 million a year. Ohtani will command a $70 million yearly salary.
