HONG KONG/TAIPEI -- When Japanese slugger Ryoya Kurihara hit a laser of a line drive straight into the mitt of Taiwanese first baseman Chu Yu-hsien, allowing him to step on the bag for a quick double play to end their Premier12 championship game in Tokyo on Sunday, viewers in Taiwan burst into joy.

Taiwan's historic 4-0 upset against the team known as Samurai Japan, which had been on a 27-game winning streak in international competitions, was more than just a victory in an off-season tournament. For many in Taiwan, it was a moment of delight as well as catharsis.
