SEOUL -- In a significant step for the region, three Central Asian nations announced in February they would launch a joint bid to host the 2031 Asian Cup. Excitement was, however, tempered by the fact that by the end of the month, it was just one of six bids in the running to stage Asia's biggest soccer tournament.
As well as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan working together, the national soccer federations of Kuwait, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates, South Korea and Australia made formal "Expressions of Interest" in the quadrennial competition.
