SAITAMA, Japan -- Major Japanese lens maker Tamron is set to open in Vietnam in January what will eventually become its biggest plant worldwide in terms of output, accelerating production in the Southeast Asian nation rather than China in the face of growing geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Washington.

The 4 billion yen ($26.75 million) facility -- the company's second factory in the country -- will cover an area of 28,500 square meters in a Hanoi industrial complex, handling the entire lens manufacturing process, from molding to painting and assembly. It is scheduled to become fully operational, with a workforce of 1,500, by 2028.
