WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump's Asia team is taking shape, with a mixture of donors, military veterans and congressional staffers -- but not career diplomats -- assuming key positions at the State Department, Pentagon and National Security Council (NSC).

Multiple sources have told Nikkei Asia that Michael DeSombre, a former ambassador to Thailand and major donor to the Republican Party, is expected to serve as assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, replacing veteran diplomat Daniel Kritenbrink.
