NEW YORK -- U.S. President Donald Trump's nominee for Commerce secretary, Howard Lutnick, on Wednesday backed broad-based tariffs in order to end what he called the "disrespect" America is dealt by not just China but also allies like South Korea and Japan when it comes to trade.

"We are treated horribly by the global trading environment," Lutnick said in a lengthy Senate confirmation hearing in Washington. "They all have higher tariffs, non-tariff trade barriers and subsidies. They treat us poorly, we need to be treated better. We need to be treated with respect."
