WASHINGTON -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had an introductory call with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Friday, marking the first engagement between the two top economic officials.

He, a Politburo member, is described as the "lead person for China-U.S. economic and trade affairs" by Xinhua news agency.
