LG wins patent crown in Europe

South Korean group acquired 1,792 patents in the EU last year

LG Display holds a number of patents related to OLED technology.

SEOUL -- LG Group acquired the most patents in the European Union last year, establishing South Korea's presence in the global intellectual property race.

LG laid claim to 1,792 patents, according to data released by the European Patent Office. The Samsung group, a domestic rival that includes Samsung Electronics, came in third at 1,408. Robert Bosch, the German automotive parts maker, was the runner-up with 1,463 patents.

The results were first reported in South Korea by the Yonhap News Agency.

As one of the largest family-owned conglomerates, or chaebol, in South Korea, LG is formed around core units LG Electronics and LG Display. However, the group reportedly does not break out patents for group companies. A number of the patents held by LG are likely tied to organic light-emitting diode panels, as well as self-driving technology.

In terms of EU patent applications, Chinese smartphone maker Huawei Technologies came out on top at 2,398. Siemens, the German electrical engineering group, took second place with 2,220 filings. LG won the No. 3 spot with 2,056 applications and Samsung placed fourth with 2,016.
