Renesas sports chip technology with self-driving car

Japanese company to showcase prototype vehicle at CES

| Japan

TOKYO -- Renesas Electronics has created a prototype for a fully self-driving car equipped with company's own semiconductors, which help control the vehicle as it moves forward, turns and stops.

The Japanese company's strength lies in its broad range semiconductors used for driving, and it hopes the demonstration model will help drum up orders from car and component makers.

Renesas will showcase the autonomous vehicle at the Consumer Electronics Show in the U.S. starting Thursday, having it navigate a roughly 300-meter test track with obstacles and traffic lights. Engineers from the chipmaker's client companies will also get opportunities for a ride.

Renesas worked with U.S. and European programmers on the car-controlling software and plans to continue such collaboration with outside developers.

The Tokyo-based company hopes to get ahead of competitors such as U.S.-based Intel and Qualcomm by leveraging its expertise in automotive chips, which need to be durable enough to able to operate for extended periods of time.
