Toyota's newest self-driving tech sports keener vision

Enhanced system detects low, small objects in all directions

Toyota's U.S. AI research unit has developed a next-generation self-driving test vehicle with a 360-degree scanning capability.

NAGOYA, Japan -- Toyota Motor unveiled in the U.S. Thursday its most advanced automated driving research vehicle to date, featuring an increased ability to sense objects in its vicinity.  

Developed by the automaker's American artificial intelligence R&D unit, the Toyota Research Institute, the Platform 3.0 test vehicle is capable of detecting objects up to 200 meters away in a 360-degree view.

Thanks also to enhanced sensors, the Platform 3.0, based on the Lexus LS 600hl model, is better able to detect dark objects, as well as debris and other small and low-lying objects than its predecessor, whose scanning just focused on the forward direction.

The vehicle will be displayed at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, which opens Tuesday in Las Vegas.
