In the Trump administration's search for savings in its proposed budget, it is surely significant that support has been eliminated for many of the federally funded but autonomous organizations devoted in whole or in large part to Asian affairs.
Some say this was simply an easy means for the administration's planners to provide very modest federal savings for the proposed increase of $54 billion in the U.S. defense budget. Many of these groups have significant congressional support, and there seems little doubt that any funding that continues will be authorized at some, but likely a reduced, level.
