While a steep slowdown in overseas acquisition activity by Chinese companies has been making headlines this year, Japanese companies have been quietly accelerating their own dealmaking. Their window of opportunity however may be temporary.

Internal pressures on Japanese companies to increase their bottom line and an abundance of available cash, along with demographic shifts that are making the domestic market increasingly challenging, will likely continue to drive corporate spending on outbound mergers and acquisitions.
