BEIJING -- The high-performance, low-cost artificial intelligence model released recently by Chinese startup DeepSeek has created a wave of attention around the world. DeepSeek-R1 appears to offer performance that rivals alternatives from the U.S., but the company says it was developed at less than a tenth of the cost of those models. Chinese technology news portal 36Kr interviewed the company's founder, Liang Wenfeng, in July 2024.
