Sprint and the art of deception

Rocky rebuilding efforts eventually paid off, but the US telecom's future is far from certain

TOKYO -- SoftBank's can-do chairman Masayoshi Son knew that turning around his beleaguered U.S. subsidiary Sprint would not be easy. But he figured he had just the right person. Motioning the company's youngest director, chief technology officer Junichi Miyakawa, to sit center table during a director's meeting in the summer of 2014, Son told him to pack his bags. "Today's meeting is your farewell party. You're going to the U.S. the day after tomorrow," he informed the director.
