TOKYO -- Japanese telecommunications company KDDI announced Monday that it will help develop the first subway in Manila by constructing telecom and fare collection systems, as part of a national project to ease traffic congestion and air pollution in the metropolitan area.

KDDI will be responsible for telecom and fare systems on about 30 kilometers of the Metro Manila Subway Project, a train depot and the operations control center.
