TAIPEI Taiwan is poised to become the first place in Asia to grant same-sex couples the right to marry after the island's top court ruled on May 24 that the current ban on homosexual union is unconstitutional.

After the ruling, Secretary-General Lu Tai-lang of Taiwan's Judicial Yuan told reporters, "Relevant agencies should amend laws or make new ones within the next two years starting from today."
