Thailand's long-awaited general election on March 24 marked a key step in the country's efforts to peacefully transition from military to civilian rule. Crucially, the main opposition Pheu Thai Party -- loyal to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra -- underperformed at the polls, meaning no party appears likely to achieve a stand-alone majority in the lower house of the National Assembly.
