A special tribunal in Bangladesh on Nov. 17 sentenced ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for her role in the killing of hundreds of protesters during the July 2024 uprising that toppled her regime the following month. She has been residing in India since fleeing there in August 2024. Her banned political party, the Awami League, staged a lockdown on Nov. 13, as ongoing unrest in the days surrounding the verdict led to police and paramilitary forces deployed around government buildings and the tribunal complex, and tight security across the nation.
