SYDNEY -- Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) will enter into a landmark defense treaty, the Pacific nation's leader announced on Thursday, elevating the two countries' ties to an alliance with mutual defense obligations as the perceived threat of China's military buildup looms in the region.
