TOKYO -- The five contenders to become leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have set out diverging positions on the necessity of increasing defense spending beyond the current target of 2% of the country's gross domestic product, amid rising geopolitical tensions and U.S. pressure on its ally to increase the military budget.
