NEW DELHI/NEW YORK -- When U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris rocketed to the top of the Democratic ticket, it energized South Asian Americans who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for her campaign and prompted author Salman Rushdie to endorse the first Indian American and Black woman to be nominated for president by a major political party.
