TOKYO -- The rising social costs of dementia care are becoming a serious concern. While the financial burden on caregiving families is difficult to quantify, the total cost, including lost labor opportunities for both patients and their families, is estimated to have exceeded $1 trillion in the U.S. in 2024, according to the University of Washington. That is roughly double the cost of treating cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke.
Both the U.S. and the Asia-Pacific region have seen sharp increases in the social costs of caring for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, including caregiver burden and lost patient productivity.
